BLURB

Unemployed museum curator Lily Redway responds to an advertisement in the newspaper, thinking she is applying for a job. On the other side of that small, black-and-white box waits two things: a fantasy world come to life and a man named Rowan Keir.

Rowan is a man with many secrets. He is a shape-shifter, a descendent of old world mythology, and the guardian of a rare and valuable Nordic artifact. He is also being hunted by the god Loki and has spent the last six hundred years outsmarting and outrunning him.

With the fury of Asgard on Rowan’s trail, Lily finds herself caught up in a real-life fantasy story, a love triangle, and an ages-old war that pitches her into a different world and one very hard truth: All is fair in love and war.

EXCERPT

Lily’s mind reeled. They knew each other. And they hated each other. And Rowan owned the
damn club. This must be the trouble Rowan talked about.
“All right, outside…both of you,” she shouted, and started for the front door. Rowan caught
her wrist and pulled her around behind a curtain, into a dark hallway. The touch of his fingers on
her skin burned; threatened to derail her completely. Then the cold night air rushed over her and
his touch left her. Lily turned to face the pair of them, taking a deep, hard breath to steady her
jangled nerves. “Now, will one of you please explain to me what the hell is going on?”

Loren and Rowan caught each other’s stare, holding in that pattern for a long moment.
Neither spoke.
“Rowan…how do you know him?”
“We go way back,” he said through clenched teeth. She was afraid of what that meant. “Your
boyfriend,” he spat the word at her, “has a bad habit of stealing things from me.”
“First of all, Loren isn’t my boyfriend.”
“Didn’t look that way inside.”
“I work for him, you idiot. As for that kiss…I hardly had time to process it before you threw
him halfway across the room!”
“My prerogative as owner,” Rowan replied, unrepentant.
“Go to hell, Keir,” Loren snapped, obviously having had enough of this game.
“Fuck you,” Rowan said. “Fucking poacher.”
“If you wanted her, you should have marked her.”
“I am not a barbarian.”
“What?” Lily interjected, but went unnoticed.
“So the chest-beating He-Man bullshit is considered civilized in your world?” Loren asked
with a smirk.
“You will destroy her.”
“And it is no concern of yours.”
“It is.”
Loren rolled his eyes and laughed, a deep, sardonic chuckle that rattled Lily’s nerves. She
had no idea what this argument was really about, but at the center of it was not where she wanted
to be. “Don’t give me some lame line about her being your mate.”
“Hurt her and I will tear you limb from limb,” Rowan threatened.
“I’d like to see you try.”
“There won’t be any trying, kitten.” The air shimmered around Rowan’s form. His eyes,
normally that soft sea-and-sky color Lily loved, had dilated, shifting to black. His teeth looked
sharper, his fingernails more like claws.
“BOTH OF YOU SHUT UP!” Lily screamed, and both men froze. She swallowed around
the frustrated lump in her throat. She knew how close Rowan was to losing it, knew that Loren
had provoked him. No matter how she spun it in her head, Rowan was the monster she wished he
wasn’t, and while the offered protection flattered her, it also frightened her.
There was something deeper happening here, she knew. She had no idea what they were
really arguing about, but she knew without a doubt that she was at the crux of the fight, and was
ultimately the catalyst for whatever would happen from here on out.
“Now will one of you idiots please put aside the testosterone and calmly explain to me what
is going on? Loren?”
“Keir here is jealous because he let you get away.”

“No,” Rowan countered, his voice taking on an edge of desperation that set her nerves on
high-alert. Even with what little she knew of him, she knew he was reasonable. And he did not
sound reasonable right now. “He is dangerous, Lily.”
“I knew this was a mistake,” she muttered, pinching the bridge of her nose. This had to end
or someone was going to get hurt. “Look,” she started, forcing calm into her voice, “I don’t
know where this misguided sense of duty has come from, but as flattering as it is on both sides,
it’s a little creepy.”
“He’s jealous,” Loren said at the same moment Rowan muttered, “He is dangerous.”
Throwing her hands up in disgust, Lily turned and stalked away, hailing a cab despite both their
protests, and gave the driver Loren’s address so she could pick up her car.

My Thoughts:
Rowan Keir is thinking about advertising for a girlfriend – what a unique way to start off a book. But that begs the question; would you be one to answer that ad? Lily Redway is one such woman. Next question is; do you wish you were in her shoes?

Their first meeting seems to be a little awkward but isn’t that what you would expect? It’s a time of getting to know each other. It also leaves the reader wishing that they were a fly on the wall – wishing you could see what Lily is seeing. There is also a lot of heat between the two of them. But what starts as heat quickly turns into a blazing fire. The passion seems to ignite as soon as their lips touch. Then a secret is revealed.

If you want to know what that secret is then you will just have to go out and grab a copy of this book. You will not be disappointed. It’s a great book from beginning to end. As I read Rowan and Lily’s story, I can picture this story going up against some of the current shows out there – Arrow and Beauty and the Beast come to mind. I think Siobhan could give them a run for their money.

If you like a shape-shifter romance that is sexually charged, you will want this book on your list. It’s also a book that I wouldn’t mind reading again. I had a hard time putting it down – which is a good thing. The bad part was that I was reading it on my lunch hour and had a hard time getting back to work because I kept having to read one more page. It’s not too long so I was able to finish shortly after getting home.

Siobhan also adds in another character – love never comes easy and sometimes others can get in the way. You will want to know who Loren Eshu is and what is his connection to Rowan. The reader also gets a good look at the war between good and evil. Something else that I loved about this book was that Siobhan includes some information about Mythology. This is what is great about paranormals – nothing is off limits and creativity abounds. I look forward to see what Siobhan has in store for her readers next.

I received a copy of this book from the Jitterbug PR in exchange for an honest review

Morning sickness – what a great way to start the first chapter. Our couple, Charmeine and Tabbruis, is very happy. All the people from the first three books have reappeared here as well. Just like the first novel I reviewed, Emily gives titles to each of her chapters.

Charmeine is the Queen of Light and Tabbruis is the King of Darkness. Even though Charmeine is the Queen of Light, Emily lets her let loose with swearing. If a light-bearer can do it, then I won’t feel bad when I need to use some colorful language.

Whether you believe in the bible or not this book has used a couple of people that can be found there. I was brought up in the Baptist faith and know who Bathsheba is. I find it very interesting that Emily has made her a blood hunter but it fits. At one point in Emily’s book, she appears in another part of history and going by a different name – again the perfect choice.

Emily also shows us that true love can also come with a few bumps in the road. It’s how we handle that bump that’s important. Emily also shows her readers that even Kings can still be a royal (sorry for the pun) pain in the ass just like anyone else.

One of the characters is named Athena. She is such a sweetheart and is wise beyond her years. For me, she seems to steal every scene she is in. When it comes to fighting evil Emily shows us that no matter how young we all must join the fight – it takes everyone to overcome evil. My favorite sentence was said by Sandra “There is strength in numbers and conviction…”

This is why good characters work so well together and why evil characters never will. Charmeine and her family feel that love and family are what is important – we sometimes forget about that because other things seem to get in the way.

Emily also continues with the Billy Joel music. I did not mention it in my first review, so if you get a chance you could listen to “She’s Got a Way” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5djkVhLjw18) while you read this installment of Emily’s Light-Bearer’s Series. Also toward the end of the story, just as in the last book, we switch to classical music. The difference being, instead of Chopin we get Beethoven.

I’ve found out that come early next year, Emily is giving us another Light-bearer book. This one will be titled Conundrom. I find that interesting since the definition of conundrum is “A question asked for amusement, typically one with a pun in its answer; a riddle”. And if you know Charmeine, she tells some pretty bad light bearer – blood hunter jokes. It will be interesting to see if this is the case. I look forward to reading Conundrom and finding out for myself if this is true or not.

Charmeine by Emily Guido

First Novel in the “Light-Bearer” Series

Tabbruis feels that something is coming. Charmeine is someone that brings him joy. She is an angel and so is Tabbruis. They complement each other. What’s coming is going to affect Heaven.

I have a thing for great cars and Tabbruis drives a Dodge Charger SRT8. If I thought I could get away with it, I would love a chance to take a car like that out on the open road and get a first-hand look to see what kind of power is under the hood. It also makes me question; why Heaven need with a car but then you realize that we are finding how they came to be in Heaven together. We find out that he has actually lived on Earth for quite a while. He is what is called a blood hunter.

Charleen is an elementary school teacher. We see that sexual harassment can also occur out on the playground. But Charleen can take care of herself. She also has a pseudo brother named Shane. They ended up at the same orphanage and became fast friends. Shane is someone that is very brave – he served our country and he somehow ends up working for Tabbruis.

It seems like the music choice at the beginning of the book is Billy Joel. If you like, you may want to listen to some of his music as your read this book. One song that is brought up a couple of times is “Piano Man”, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxEPV4kolz0. And you can also check out one of my favorite tunes, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFTLKWw542g&feature=relmfu, it makes me think that Tab has seen a lot of the history that Billy Joel sings about. At the end Char’s music choice is Chopin. So if you’ve never listened to him before, I hope you will give his work a chance.

As I’m reading this story, I get a sense that this is about good vs. evil. And evil can take many forms. Good can also take many forms and one such form are the “light-bearers”. An acquaintance of Tabbruis’ explains what they are. There is always a fight between the blood hunters and light-bearers but who will come out on top in the end.

One good thing about this book is that Emily gives each chapter their own title. It gives the reader some idea as to what the chapter is going to be about. In one scene where Charleen meets Tab for the first time, we find out that Char has some very interesting abilities – you will have to read if you want to find out what those abilities are.

This is one story where opposites actually do attract. Emily also shows us that some people can change when they meet the right person. And they will overlook their differences when the need to survive is there. Tab has been told one thing about the blood hunters and the light-bearers but that doesn’t stop him from connecting and protecting Charmeine. Char is very calm about believing everything she has been told – I don’t think I would be quite as calm.

In one chapter, I got a total shock – it’s not something I saw coming or even thought as a possibility. This is what makes a great author – they surprise you when you least expect it. We also get lots of action and suspense along with our romance. We have a lot going on but you won’t get lost or think things are going on too long.

This is a book that I would love to see as a graphic novel. I say this because I would love to see the art work that would go along with Emily’s words. It would just bring this story to life more than my imagination could.

There is some religion involved in this book – God, Heaven, Angels, Lucifer – but Emily does not preach to her readers. It just shows the possibilities of what may happen between Heaven and Earth and those that fight for the good and those that follow evil. It is your choice as to what to believe.

The book I received to review actually includes three books. The books can be read by themselves but I hope you will read them in order. Once you finish these three, you will want to see what Emily has in store for us in book 4 titled “Seditious”. I also suggest that if you have a chance, check out Emily’s web site http://emilyguido.com/.

Eric is a soldier and right from the beginning we see how strong he is. Myra starts the action right from the first chapter. This story continues book one titled Love’s Captive.

Eric has come to Volarn to see his sister. They are at a ceremony when he looks at a woman standing near Rhamus. Kasha is seen attending the Tartha ceremony. It’s a place she doesn’t want to be. But then he walks up to her. She doesn’t make anything easy.

Myra puts her readers into a world that we don’t think exists. She also develops a language but she doesn’t make it so difficult that you can’t figure out what she’s talking about. She has made Eric a soldier but he’s also a man who cares about things around him.

While Kasha and Eric are out they discover something that Kasha doesn’t believe exists. You will find that this animal they discover will steal every scene Myra writes him into. He’s just so loveable. He will also make you laugh. You may also start to reminisce about your pet.

If you love to read outside, this is the perfect book to find a place in a park, maybe a beautiful garden, or even in your favorite chair with some favorite music to listen to. But Myra has also left me wondering if she has a book three for her readers. I want to learn more about the residents of Volarn. We will just have to wait and see if Eric’s sister has a story. Maybe even Jarvic has a happy ending in store for him. But in the meantime, you can always check out to see what other books she has available.
